At all times we try to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship and environmentalism. We do everything possible at club activities to ensure that bass are released alive and that the natural environment isn't spoiled. In 2010 our club "adopted" Rainbow Lake (a NJ Wildlife Management Area) and we perform shoreline & parking lot clean-ups there two or three times a year.
Our club is a member of the South Jersey Bass Club Association (SJBCA). The SJBCA offers a number of benefits to member clubs, while having only minimal dues and no interference in club operations. We are not affiliated with NJ Bass Nation (B.A.S.S.) nor The NJ Bass Federation (MLF), due to our desire to keep members’ costs low and limit the amount of outside interference in our club's operation.
We have many club members who, looking for a higher level of competition and bigger winnings, participate in tournament trails outside the club. They fish local open buddy bass tournaments, the various levels of MLF (FLW) tournament trails, and various levels of B.A.S.S. tournament trails. For information on our members' success in these trails, check out the Other Results section of this website.
The S.J. Hawg Hunters
hold a number of club bass tournaments during the year.
All
tournaments are "buddy" format, with members
declaring their designated partners at the beginning of each
season. Our tournaments are held at lakes and rivers in
most of the counties of South Jersey. For tournament
fishing, each team's boat must be equipped with an aerated
livewell or cooler large enough to sustain the limit of
bass. All boats must also have a life vest for each
person on board.
Points are awarded for top-five place finishes, lunker wins, heavy bags of fish, number of fish caught and attendance. The normal limit is five fish per team, with a maximum of two fishermen per team. The club holds a "Classic" tournament at the end of each season -- held on two consecutive days on two different bodies of water. Only teams that have fished at least ten tournaments during the regular season are invited to participate in the Classic. Following our club tournament season, a six-man team representing the club participates in the annual SJBCA "Bass Bowl". Our six-man team is made up of the top three teams in our club's final point standings.
We also sometimes organize long-weekend fishing/camping trips to such fishing locations as Kerr Reservoir (Va), Mattawoman Creek/Potomac River (Md), Lake Anna (Va) and Pocomoke River, (Md). We usually hold a pre-season meeting and a club barbecue near the end of the season. In the past, we took annual winter club trips to Bass Pro Shops in Md or the Bass Expo in Md.
Currently, the club President/Secretary/Treasurer/Webmaster is Fred Lentz. Tournament Director/Weighmaster is Bill Duckardt. Back-up Weighmasters are Dave Lloyd, Scott Bowen, Ken Merlock Sr & Chris Oeser. Weigh-in Recorder is Greg Lentz. Photographer is Joe Nemeth. Livewell checker is Scott Bowen. NOTE: THIS IS THE ORIGINAL SOUTH JERSEY HAWG HUNTERS BASS CLUB. A NJ Bass Federation club formed in Willingboro using the same name as our club has no relationship whatsoever with our club. (On an historical note, there was another club of this same name that was formed around the same time as our club, in the early 1990's, and lasted a few years. When they disbanded, many of their members joined our club.)
